More in Maui

Maui Lava Flows

We really wanted the kids to experience and understand the nature of the volcano in Maui. We took a trip to the lava flows. Wow. It is here that lava poured out into the ocean. As you look around, everywhere is covered in black rock. Also, we spent time looking in the tidal pools. We saw a baby eel. This was the only day that was cold and cloudy, so this was a perfect outing for the morning.

Okay listen up ANDERSON's and BISCHOFFS: You probably heard some tour guide tell you the difference between the TWO kinds of LAVA in Hawaii.

One is PA OIOI, and the other is AH AH.

Paoioi is characterized by it's SMOOTH surface as the lava cooled and hardened.

AH AH is characterized by it's very rough and crunchy surface which you cannot walk upon without shoes. Infact the old hawaiians (Kamaina) used to say that is how it got it's name; when you walked barefoot on it (Hawaiian style) you would cry out "AH AH".

And that ends our Hawaiian lesson for today.

LOVE,

papa
